As a single mother, you know how difficult it can be to juggle home life and work life. You also have dreams of a career rather than just a job where you can, provide a financially sound future for you and your children. Fulfilling that dream means getting an education. Fitting it time for school, finding the right program and still meeting your other obligations can seem overwhelming but there are educational programs well-suited for single mothers.

Continuing Education

Not every job requires a full blown college degree. Some jobs require just specific training. Many colleges, particularly community colleges, offer continuing education. Here you can take classes to either familiarize yourself or refresh your skills in a wide variety of topics. Computer skills, nursing, mechanical areas, even second languages are available. Any of these could improve your skills and help you land a better job.

Free Courses Online

The Internet puts a wealth of information at your disposal. There are free online courses you can take in everything from typing to business management. Some may provide only the basics but other courses can provide all the training you need to fully develop a given skill. DO some research and see what you can find.

Night and Weekend College Courses

Many colleges offer classes on nights and weekends. Some college offer entire degree programs you can earn by taking just weekend classes. These may suit your schedule better if you have an ex-spouse who has the kids on the weekends. Check out the options offered by colleges in your area as they vary from school to school.

Online College

Some online colleges are virtual only and have no brick and mortar buildings to go with them. They are just as reputable, in many cases, as the community college in your neighborhood. Both offer you the option of taking college credited classes from the comfort of your home. You need a computer, access to the Internet and whatever materials each class requires. This gives you limitless flexibility in arranging your schedule.

Employment Agencies

The unemployment office in your area as well as many employment agencies, temp services and assistance programs can direct you to local education classes. These may be seminars on skills like interviewing, writing a resume or improving typical office skills. These educational programs are often fee and open to anyone. Taking these classes can enhance your chances of landing a job or getting a better job.

Leave no stone unturned when you seek educational opportunities. State and local government agencies can also direct you to local programs. Check with your park district, community center, even your local library. All of these venues offer classes from time to time. Any one of them could lead to the business contact you need or the job you have been searching for.
