Scholarships

As a single mother, you know how important it is to obtain an education. Don’t expect less for yourself than you do for your children. When it comes to going back to school you may feel as if you are at a disadvantage because of your age, your responsibilities, and your financial situation. It is important that you know there are options to help you obtain or complete your education and get a degree that are specifically designed to work with single moms.

Scholarships are a wonderful way to finance your degree because they don’t have to be paid back. While scholarships are generally thought of in reference to high school performance, sports, or other academic achievements, there are scholarships for single parents continuing education.

In order to begin tracking down and applying for single mom scholarships, you will have to put to use all those juggling and organizational skills you’ve developed as a single mom.

The first tool you will need is a notebook that is only for scholarship information. Once you have your notebook, the time has come to actually get to work. Use search engines online, information from community colleges nearby, bulletin boards at community services offices, and financial aid organizations to collect information about available scholarships for single moms.

When you find a scholarship that looks promising, make sure that you jot down the following important aspects of it in your notebook:

  • Name of the organization
  • Address
  • Name, telephone number and email of the contact person
  • Dates concerning postmark and due date for application
  • Whether you must apply via post or electronically
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Any information that will help you with your application process

It may take a while before you find any scholarships that you are eligible for, but it is important that you keep looking. Essentially when you are applying for a scholarship, you are trying to beat the odds. What this means is that the more scholarships you apply for, the more you are likely to be awarded one. Several scholarships will help finance your education even better than one. So jump in, and beat the odds.

Complete any scholarship application that you qualify for. Keep track of applications sent, and follow up if you don’t hear back within a certain time frame. Don’t let anything fall through the cracks. You have to stay on top of your game to remain organized and prepared for a scholarship acceptance!

Get a scholarship, go back to school, and get your degree. Not only will you feel successful, your children will be proud of you, and more likely to pursue educational goals themselves.

A great idea for organization is to find all the scholarships that you want to apply, make as list of them, and than apply for them all at once, so you will have all the information right there!

Don’t forget to fill out your school’s scholarship applications too. A lot of the time, colleges have one large application you can fill out, then they’ll automatically go out and put your name in for anything you would be eligible for, so it’s a lot less work for you.
