Simply the thought of college tends to put wrinkles on the foreheads of many; it is quite a stressful and attention seeking task that tends to remain in our heads. There are two different aspects of college that tend to cause us this worry, the social aspect and the educational aspect. Now, lets take a look at the educational aspect: Choosing a Major. Some people are very indecisive and are unable to choose which leads you to sitting through so many classes just to find the right one. To help you decide and wisely choose a major that you will longingly stick to here are a few things to consider:

Know You Interests.

When deciding on something, you want to know what things about it interest you. Now you can look at this in two ways; one are you interested in a major that leads you to a well-paying job or are you interested in a major that leads to enjoy your what you are doing. Many people enjoy doing service related work, which doesn’t always get you the nicest house or car, while those high school computer geeks turn out working with apple. So it’s really important where your interest lie while choosing a major.

Ask Questions, Seek Help.

For some odd reason, many people shy away from asking questions and think they know it all, Wrong. The more you talk to people the more you learn about it. There are reasons why there are designated people to HELP you decide your major. So go out and talk to your friends, family, and acquaints, if you already know what they said, okay it was reassuring, if not, you learned something new.

Know Your Strengths.

When selecting a major to go into you may want to sit back and reflect on which subjects and topics you have had success in and which you could use a lot of practice in. If, lets say math is your strength you may want to look into a major that requires a lot of math, such as engineering. On the contrary, if math is your weakest point then you may want to think about how much you are going to struggle to grasp concepts as the levels increase. You can always improve with practice, but if there is a certain topic, that the thought of it simply disinterests you, and then it may not lead to a successful and happy career.

Know Your Career Path.

For many, choosing a major is the easiest when they know what it is exactly that they want to do in the future. If you have a career that is of your interest you simply have to choose a major that reciprocates that into your classes.

In all, deciding a major isn’t something that should be done by yourself, you can ask all the question you want until you are certain, because in the end your major is what leads you to your career.

Learning is a life long process, and many adults are finding that higher education can be a key to the puzzle in advancing them in their chosen careers. Some even reach a point in their lives where they decide that the career field that they chose when they were younger no longer appeals to them and make the decision to change direction completely and go back to school to learn about an entirely new field.

While many higher learning institutions still design their courses of studies around traditional students, those who enroll in college immediately after graduating from high school, most are finding that non-traditional students are looking for educational programs that fit into their current time schedules.

Adults with full time jobs, the unemployed, single parents and even senior citizens are taking the opportunity to earn degrees and certificates as technology makes their world a quickly changing environment that they need new skills to keep up with. Colleges and trade schools are quickly adapting to conform to the new types of students by offering more night classes and even entire programs that can be done online.

Adults are learning that earning a degree doesn’t mean that they have to put their lives on hold so that they can attend school full time. They can take as much time as they need to fulfill their dreams of getting that diploma. It doesn’t matter if they live far from a brick and mortar learning institution or in a campus town. Many universities offer satellite campuses in rural areas to aid students who are not able to relocate to the main campus.

Going back to school, and being successful, takes commitment. Before you start signing up for loans and grants to pay for school, and before you actually enroll in classes, make sure that this is the right time to commit to your continuing education. You may have to make adjustments to your learning plans so that the demands that your life is making on you at the present time will allow you to devote time to your studies without harming your family or your employment.

Time will have to be found not only to go to class, but to do the required reading and studying. This means that you have to be prepared in the event that you have to give some things up. If there are young children in the house, arrangements will have to be made so that you are assured that they are well taken care of so that you can focus on your studies. Even if you choose online coursework from the comfort of your own home, you need to be able to regularly log on to the computer and have blocks of uninterrupted time to focus on your studies.

Tuition and school expenses may also be a factor in the timing of your return to school. Take into consideration that other expenses, including daycare and traveling expenses will also be taking money out of your household budget.

Once you find the right path to follow in lifelong learning, you’ll be rewarded by the investment that you have made in yourself.

Nothing can be so important to a single mom as support; emotional, psychological and social. Being a single mom is a rewarding but often grueling experience. When there is no one else in the household to share all the responsibilities of child care, household maintenance and financial obligations, it can become overwhelming. If mom becomes overwhelmed, the family structure can break down and her health and well-being can suffer. Support takes some of the pressure off, even if it is just an outlet to laugh and cry with others who can relate.

Single moms need time for themselves and that can be hard to come by. Formal support groups often provide child care so that single moms can come together for fellowship. There, the women gather to talk about child rearing issues, discipline, diet, education and general topics. They might also discuss problems they have maintaining their homes, share resources and discuss whether or not they can or are dating again.

Not only can they help each other resolve problems they are having, they let one another know they are not alone. That can be such a blessing when a single mom feels that she is carrying the load alone. Friendships often form out of single mom support groups. Babysitting chains and play groups can be another offshoot from such meetings. Some support groups get together without the kids so they can talk more freely, laugh and let their hair down. This type of social gathering serves to relieve stress and can help moms feel more relaxed.

Finding Support Groups

Child care centers often allow parents there to meet or form support groups of various kinds, not just single mothers’ groups. Churches can be another source of support. Your state’s department of child or family services can also direct you to support groups for single moms. If all else fails, there are thousands of support groups and forums online that you can turn to for advice and camaraderie.

Start Your Own Support Group

If you would like the support of a group of single moms but cannot locate on in your area, start your own. You can start by speaking to any of the agencies mentioned above to see if they will allow you to post a flyer with your contact information. Churches may even let you use their facilities for your meetings. If your children are school age, draft a flyer and ask the school if they will allow it to be distributed to the kids to take home to their parents.

Many local newspapers will allow you to run a community service ad for free. You can announce your first meeting and go from there with whoever shows up. You can also try posting your notice at other places where children come together: gymnastics or dance lesson facilities, scouting meetings, tae kwon do classes or the local ballpark or soccer field.

The important things to hold onto is that the benefit of the support group, whether you join an existing one or create your own, will far outweigh any effort you expend in finding or making it. Not only will benefit from your participation but so will your children. Children are happier when their parent is content and less stressed.

Being a single mom brings many challenges. Without a life partner to share the burdens of everyday life, even raising one child on your own can be difficult. Finding answers and support can make a single mom’s job a lot easier.

Continuing Education

In order to better their circumstances, many single moms return to skill. By enhancing their skills and educational background, they can pursue better-paying jobs. Grants and scholarships are available as well as other forms of financial assistance. Fastweb is a good resource for non- academic scholarships available to anyone who meets the various requirements.

Support Groups

For social and moral support, single moms like to turn to other single moms. Who better to understand what they are contending with than other single moms? Churches, schools and other organizations often sponsor such support groups. Single mom support forums can also be found all over the Internet. These groups can provide resources, camaraderie and a social outlet which can help relieve the stress that comes from being a single mom.

Career Assistance

From guidance choosing a career to resume preparation, there are many resources for starting or changing careers. Indeed.com, CareerBuilder.com and onster.com offer not only job listing but help with resumes and places to post your resume for potential employers. Many placement services offer placement testing to help you try to select a career field most suited to your experiences, skills and talents.

Housing Assistance

There are a number of state and local programs that can provide either housing or a housing subsidy for single moms who meet the requirements of the individual programs. Check with your state and local government to find out what is available in your area. In addition, you may be able to get assistance with utility or heating bills, particularly during winter months. Some of the agencies that may be able to help are US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), USDA Rural Development/Housing & Community Facilities Programs (HCFP) and the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

Financial Assistance

In addition to any of the resources mentioned elsewhere in this article, single moms can also find help from other agencies for things like health, child care and food. Free clinics can provide for some health care and well-baby checkups. Medicaid is a federally funded program that provides healthcare for children. Many of these programs are administered by each state so you will have to do some research in your state.

The Department of Children and Families offers a program called Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program. It provides coupons that can be used to purchase specific grocery items to promote healthy diets. What used to be known as food stamps is now part of Public Aid. Debit-type cards containing a family’s allocated funds can be used to buy only qualifying items.

This is only a partial list of the available resources a single mom can use to help her whether tough times or improve her circumstances. There are numerous websites dedicated to helping single moms. A simple search will reveal dozens of sites.

It’s true that the government is slashing funding for programs that help low income citizens, but there is still help available. Many of the programs run out of money and close the application process, but if this happens to you, ask when more funds become available and if you can reapply. Some programs will save your paperwork while others make it your responsibility to initiate the application process from the beginning. The best advice to applying for these programs is to keep up with the news about the funding process and contact the individual departments about the funding status on a regular basis.

One of the best ways to keep up with the information on government programs that can be of benefit to the single mom is by contacting the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. HHS is the primary agency in the US protecting health and providing the essential human services. Those who are the most vulnerable and less able to help themselves can especially find assistance through HHS.

State and county services are often funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Private sector grantees often are able to offer assistance thanks to funding through HHS.

Finding Help for Child Care

Paying for child care while you go to work often is a hardship for the single mom. It can often interfere with the job hunting process if you have to hire someone that you trust to take care of the kids while you are out looking for a job. There aren’t a lot of single moms whose budgets allow for the extra expense without some money coming in. There are government resources available when you need affordable child care and parents should look into the possibility that they are eligible to take advantage of it.

The National Child Care Information and Technical Assistance Center is a resource and referral agency that can help single moms find affordable child care. Child Care Aware a free federally funded service can help you locate a local CCR&R who will be able to give you assistance in finding out if you are qualified for subsidized or even free child care. Call Child Care Aware at 800-424-2246 and ask for the nearest local Child Care Resource and Referral Agency, also known a CC$&R for information on special funding options that may be available to you.

For single moms who have children between the ages of three and five, Head Start is a place to look for assistance. If the children are younger, Early Head Start is the program that serves infants and toddlers. Parents usually have to be low income to be eligible for assistance, but if you are at the Federal Poverty Level or lower, you may qualify.

Temporary Assistance

The TANF program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families is a federally funded program that may be able to help the single mom with time limited assistance when the basic needs of the family cannot be met. This program is administered on a state level. Ask for more information at your local Department of Health and Human Services.

It costs a lot of money to raise a family. That’s why most families need to have two incomes to make ends meet. Unfortunately, the single mom usually has to do it alone and the burdens can sometimes be overwhelming.

There are financial assistance resources available from the government to help families who are facing financial hardship. The help is usually applied for on the local and state level, even though the funding for these benefit programs comes from the federal government.

When it comes to being a responsible parent, the single mom often has no choice but to seek outside assistance to make sure that her family is well taken care of. Many single moms will find that they meet the eligibility requirements for several types of programs, while others find that only one or two assistance programs can help them.

Eligibility for a government financial aid program does not guarantee that the family will automatically get the benefit. If funding runs out, eligible applicants may be put on a waiting list or be asked to reapply at a later date.

Medicaid

If you don’t have proper medical insurance to cover the needs of your family, or no medical insurance, check to see if you or your children qualify to be covered under Medicaid. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the responsible federal agency that is administered by the individual state. Every state sets its rules about the coverage and eligibility.

If you are a US citizen, US national or permanent resident of the United States and are low income, check to see if you or children under the age of 19 are eligible in the state that you are living in.

Food Stamps

The food stamp program can help the single mom who qualifies make sure that she is able to provide a nutritional diet to her family. The program is federally funded, but administered by local and state agencies.

Vehicles and bank accounts are taken into consideration when applications for food stamps are processed. Income that is not counted includes Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, and Temporary Assistance for Needing Families.

Apply for food stamps under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. You can also apply at Social Security offices.

Emergency Food Assistance

The Emergency Food Assistance Program, or TEFAP, can be a temporary way of helping a single mom provides meals for her family in an emergency. It is designed for low income families and individuals, including the elderly and gives food at no cost.

Education Assistance

A Pell Grant is federal assistance that can mean the difference between the ability of a single mom to continue her education or have to give up the dream because of the high costs of returning to school. If you are eligible to receive a Pell Grant, it is worth the time and effort to apply as this is a grant, not a loan. It does not have to be paid back.

If you still need funds to attend school, look into student loans, starting with the Stafford. Almost every college in the United States makes the Stafford Student Loans available.

Going to college is a big step in one’s life. Up until high-school you have been very dependant on the people around you, starting college you are all alone and have to figure thing out on your own. Being a single mom and having to manage college classes, work, and your children can be quite a workload. You really have to change your mindset and perception on how things work; you aren’t that 18 year old that was in high school, you are know an 18 year old that goes to college your change of surrounding and people change a lot of you. So here are some things to keep in mind while going into college, not about how you should study or what classes you should take but key life ideology to keep in mind.

Time management becomes more important.

You are not going to have your mother or father coming in every morning telling you to get up and get ready for school. You are your own person, if you don’t wake to one alarm you may want to set may different ones. Furthermore, you are not only responsible for yourself but also the child that is going to tagged to your side until you find someone to take care or him/her. Your professor is not going to wait for you to arrive, if you are late, you are no longer allowed inside for the day’s lesson.

Learning for your own benefit.

Don’t think you are attending college for your parents, or for your child, you are going to college for yourself. Learning isn’t going to make your parents any richer, but learning and getting a good job will make you richer. The reason you are doing this is so you can receive a good education and get a good job that pays for everything you need and want to be happy.

Don’t be anti-social.

In college you want to make sure that you know people in all you classes. If you were unable to attend a class you want to have someone to call to ask for the notes. If you are a shy person, college is the turn in your life where you change that aspect of your life. Not talking and communicating with others will get you nowhere. You should be comfortable being able to go up to your professor to clear something up or walk up to another student to ask for help.

Don’t over think or overanalyze everything.

Everyone knows how stressful college can be you aren’t alone. There are so many things that you have to keep in mind and be aware of, such as buying you books, choosing classes, fitting in, getting used to the independency and all they change and responsibility college bring along with it. Just make sure that throughout the process that you remain somewhat sane. Don’t let every little think get to your head, you’re only human you are bound to make mistake and over time you will eventually fix them and hopefully learn form the experience.

It is not as if you buy one book and you are done with, college often requires you to buy multiple books, many costing over $100 each. Being a single mom it is not easy having to afford books costing hundreds of dollars, especially when you have more prioritizing needs on which you have to spend your money on. This can be a very stressful process for many people. You don’t have to deal with it entirely though. There are ways in which you can buy your books for cheaper and not have to spend so much money and stress yourself out – try cheap used textbooks!

Burrow Books.

Not everyone is able to take the class you take at the same time, they are bound to take he same class at a different time, which means that you can borrow there book for the time being. This is where you want to make sure that you know people from whom you can barrow books. There is no shame is sharing books, not everyone can afford to buy 6 different books costing 200 dollars each. Try to find out who else takes the same class but at a different time, this can save you and the other person a lot of money. You can buy one book and another person can buy another books. Sharing the load in college is going to very vital.

Buy used books.

If you go to a store and look at the pricing difference between new and used books, you will notice it is a drastic difference. When buying books used books, depending on the subject, the price can be much cheaper, usually around 100 dollars cheaper. A book may be cheaper depending on its condition. When buying used books, you must keep in mind the pages are not going to be crisp and clean. Many used books may be torn, worn-out, written and highlighted all over. So buying used books is a cheaper option but not the cleanest.

Look online.

If you haven’t already you should probably utilize one of your key resources: The Internet. No, I am not saying that you are going to find the whole book typed up online but you many find some useful information. If you inter in the author of one of your books there us usually a website that talks about what the book contains and some information that you can use. Keep in mind that you can’t always trust every website you see, not all of it contains the right information.

Buy Online.

There are many handy online websites where you can buy supplies such as Ebay.com, Amazon.com and Half.com. These websites will offer you the same books you were looking for at a much reasonable price. The price range varies depending on if you are buying a new or used item, except the difference is that even if you buy a new book the price isn’t going to over the top, it will still be much cheaper then if you buy it at the bookstore.

Starting college can be a very scary thing. It is a whole new experience where everyone is new and different. Especially for those who move states and times zones, for you nothing is familiar, you just have to start fresh. Single moms who have to go through this, it can be both exciting and difficult. Have a child and attending school is never easy. You are always worried about how he/she is doing. So in order to decrease your tension towards college and make sure that you are most comfortable, here are some suggestions.

Don’t be awkward.

College, aside from the educational aspect, is all about meeting and making new friends that will last you a lifetime. Don’t be afraid to let loose and step out of your comfort zone, if someone approaches you be friendly and try to make conversation. Having reliable and trustworthy friends can be a lifesaver in college; you have to deal with so much they can help decrease you stress. Your friend is always going to be there for you to talk to and share your feeling with.

Get Involved.

This is that one phrase that you have probably been hearing since the first day of high school, only because it is true! College has so much to offer, clubs sports, student body; you are bound to find an activity in which you fit in perfectly. Furthermore, it is a perfect way of meeting people with whom you have common likes. Also, getting involved gives you empty time to fill, rather then sitting in your dorm dreading over the place or having your thoughts go into the negative direction, being involved in a club will help you get out and notice new things.

Communication is key.

Every campus has counselors; they are there to help you with what ever may be bothering you. You should not feel uncomfortable or weird going into their office. Counselors are trained people who can help you go through any difficulty you are facing. If you feel like you do not fit in, can’t make new friends, having trouble with someone they will help you realize those feeling and help you overcome them. They will give you advice that may be the most helpful thing you have heard at all.

Know your Professors.

Your professors probably see hundreds of students’ everyday in one class; you don’t want to be just another face in the crowd. You want to make sure that your professor knows you personally. Being on good terms with your professors can be very beneficial. You should not hesitate when asking them question, just make sure they are reasonable.

Going to college for some is like going from a small-populated town to a huge city. Some people who find the right route exceed in life and some who tend to get lost in the crowd loose their motive. Don’t be that person. Life is only has hard as you make it. As long as you are willing to open up a bit you are going to fit in fine.
